About the Band

Lewisham Concert Band was formed in 1967 and is one of Southern England’s most highly regarded wind orchestras. Originally conducted by Joseph Proctor it became famous for its numerous broadcasts in the 1970s and 1980s on BBC Radio 2’s ‘Friday Night is Music Night’ and ‘Listen to the Band’. Nowadays, it consists of professional and amateur musicians based in London and the Home Counties and regularly performs in London and the South East of England.

The band is fortunate to have had Leslie Lake as our conductor since 2004. Leslie is the bass trombonist with the English National Opera and musical director of the Locke Brass Consort.

We undertake a number of ‘band socials’ throughout the year, including a regular pilgrimage to Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk for Woodforde’s Wherry and a sell-out concert in aid of the RNLI. Other recent concerts include an anniversary concert at Southwark  Cathedral and the Cantley House Proms as well as a tour to Berlin.

The Band is available for hire throughout the year and have a varied repertoire, ranging from wind band classics and marches to classical, jazz, and popular music.
